The course of studies is geared towards the acquisition of scientifically founded professional competence in childhood pedagogy work settings. Students are prepared for direct educational work with children from their arrival at a children’s day-care establishment up to the age when they leave. They are also trained for working with families, working in guidance roles, and in promoting networks in the social environment.
During the course of studies, leadership competencies are acquired, which equip students to take on demanding tasks in multidisciplinary teams. Students acquire comprehensive qualifications in the sphere of research, which enable them to provide academic backup to education practitioners.
The specialist knowledge acquired can be transferred to new practical lines of inquiry, so that developments in the discipline are applied in practice by children’s day-care establishments. In addition, students acquire the ability for reflective professional self-development.
Degree course content
The acquisition of knowledge on this degree course is interdisciplinary. It covers current findings from all disciplines and thematic areas relevant to development during childhood, and the support provided by public institutions.
These include principles of early education, social sciences and developmental psychology as well as case-based extension of knowledge about education processes and their didactics as well as systematic knowledge about key tasks of day-care practice such as group dynamics, conflict resolution, methods of participation, quality development or early support.
Main focuses of the degree programme are primarily conceptual groundwork and practice-based research.
The course of studies contains three practice-based phases: 15-day placement in the first semester; 30-day placement in the fourth semester; internship semester in the form of a 60-day placement with a training plan in the sixth semester.
A higher education entrance qualification is a general prerequisite for admittance to the programme of study. International applicants must provide proof of educational qualifications that permit study in Germany (school-leaving certificate, certificate of university attendance). The anabin database provides information about the validation of foreign educational qualifications.
The language of instruction is German. Foreign applicants must prove they have adequate knowledge of German. Evidence of the necessary German language skills can be provided in the form of:
- the ‘Kleines Deutsches Sprachdiplom’ or ‘Großes Deutsches Sprachdiplom’, or
- the Goethe Institute’s ‘Zentrale Oberstufenprüfung’
- the ‘Sprachdiplom der Kultusministerkonferenz Stufe II’ or
- the ‘deutsche Sprachprüfung für den Hochschulzugang (DSH Stufe 2)’, or
- ‘TestDaF, (minimun 16 total points and level 3 in the examination modules) or
- ‘TELC Deutsch C1 Hochschule’ or
- proof of having passed the entrance examination at a preparatory college.
Applicants who are unable to fulfil the specified admission requirements may contact a preparatory college (‘Studienkolleg’). These specifically prepare foreign applicants for a course of study in Germany. Magdeburg-Stendal University of Applied Sciences does not have its own preparatory college. The state-run preparatory college responsible for our institution is located at Anhalt University of Applied Sciences in Köthen.
