On the following pages you will find information here on life in our two locations, Magdeburg and Stendal. As well as tips on the city and on the campus you will find information and emergency contact numbers (e.g. in the event of illness) and some useful links. If you have further questions, the International Office will be glad to assist you.

Magdeburg

The City

Magdeburg is the capital city of the German State of Saxony-Anhalt with a population of over 230,000. As well as numerous landmark sights like Magdeburg Cathedral and the Green Citadel, there is lots to discover in Magdeburg: for instance the many parks, the late-nineteenth century architecture around Hasselbachplatz with the city’s “pub mile”, cultural events, sporting events and much more.

The Campus

For the part of the University located in Magdeburg, all the departments are located in Breitscheidstraße. Projects and continuing education provision are based at a second location in Brandenburger Straße.

University Institutions

Unit II, Student Affairs

The Unit for Student Affairs or the registration and examination office administers your personal and academic data. It is responsible for admissions, registration (including the production and issue of student ID cards), de-registration and re-registration, and for the production of academic records. Please get in touch immediately if your address or health insurer has changed (can also be done online). For exchange students the Unit is also responsible for producing the Transcript of Records. Library

Your student ID card entitles you to use the University Library’s services. You will find a large selection of text books and newspapers, journals, CDs and DVDs, and also have the facility to search online and in catalogues. Please note that Magdeburg-Stendal University of Applied Sciences and Otto von Guericke University are two separate institutions. Therefore as a student at one university you do not automatically have access to the other university library. You can, however, apply for a guest account there. Further information can be found

University Computer Centre (ITM)

The ITM is Magdeburg-Stendal University of Applied Sciences' computer centre and media centre. It provides computer pools and many software applications as well as special workstations with scanners etc. It is also a place where you can use the Internet and activate and access your University email account. You can log onto the computers with the access data that you receive with your student ID. Regarding the use of computers in your Department, please ask in the departmental office. Career Center

The Career Center’s tasks consist of advice and guidance as well as the direct placement of university students and graduates in companies and other organisations. It provides advice and various events on seeking a job or an internship, and services including an online jobs portal. Further information can be found

University Sports Office

As a student at Magdeburg-Stendal University of Applied Sciences you can take part in a wealth of sporting courses (normally free of charge) which are offered during the semester and in the semester break. Please note that enrolment is only possible online, and that prior to enrolment you must be registered on a course. The Magdeburg-Stendal University of Applied Sciences Sports Office can be found in Building 4, Room 2.13.1. Further information can be found

You can obtain treatment from the emergency service outside normal opening hours, i.e. in the evenings and at weekends as well. It is staffed by both general medical practitioners and medical specialists.

Stendal

The City

The hanseatic town of Stendal with its population of 40,600 is the geographical and economic centre of the Altmark region.

Stendal is a place where diverse hanseatic traditions and significant examples of North German red-brick gothic architecture have been preserved. This is evident, for example, in sites like the St. Nikolai Cathedral, the two well preserved city gates, and the marketplace with its town hall, Roland statue and St. Mary’s Church. Stendal also boasts a theatre, pleasant restaurants and cafés and many green spaces.

The Campus

Two departments are based on the Stendal campus: the Department of Economics and the Department of Applied Human Sciences.
